John’s interest in motoring and passion for motorsports began at an early age when he was taken with family friend Pierre Rohan in his modified Jaguar E-type (crouching on the floor and holding on to the roll cage!) to watch him race at nearby Brands Hatch. Whilst at boarding school, John established a go-kart club and also took lessons at Brands Hatch’s Motor Racing Stables.
Following an international course in 1978 with the Jim Russell Racing Drivers’ School based at Snetterton, John’s winning ways were rewarded with a place in their school racing team, Jim Russell Racing. John then joined the BRP (British Racing Prospects) team and successfully competed in Formula Ford UK national championships with team mate Andy Wallace.
Family commitments and a move overseas meant a hiatus in his racing activities, until he returned to the UK, and a one-off outing in a Jim Russell Formula Vauxhall developed into a number of races within their winter series.
John’s ownership of Lynx provided him with the opportunity to utilise his experience and success in formula cars, to compete in historic racing. A variety of cars including Jaguar C- and D-types, factory Jaguar Lightweight E-types, the ex-Rob Walker Ferrari 250 SWB and Ford GT40s have been raced at circuits including Goodwood, Silverstone, Le Mans, Daytona, Sebring and Laguna Seca.
John has also competed in modern GT racing, winning overall the 2003 Brno Six Hours FIA GT race in a BMW M3 GTS, with co-drivers Rory Passey and David Gooding. A class win was also achieved in the ex-Le Mans Group C2 Tiga 286 nicknamed ‘The Pink Panther’ with Jim Graham in a three-hour Group C endurance race at Silverstone.
With the knowledge and experience gained in a wide variety of machinery, John continues to enjoy his active involvement in motor racing.
